Was wird aus Ebay bei der anstehenden Dreiteilung (“Ebay will 2015 auch Magento und Ebay Enterprise abstoßen”)?

Nachdem Paypal künftig prinzipiell auch Amazon & Co. offen steht (“PayPal can work with all commerce/marketplace companies”), hat nun auch Ebay etwas mehr über seine bisherigen Versäumnisse künftigen Ambitionen verraten.

“Zurück zu den Wurzeln” scheint hier neuerdings die Devise (“The Next Chapter for eBay”):

“In thinking about our next chapter, I am guided by a few strong principles: define and focus on where we can win; drive innovation in product and experiences; play our game and be unlike any other business.  And we must deliver on behalf of our customers, employees and our shareholders.

Creating a vibrant marketplace is the core of our success.

There is an estimated $100 billion of value trapped in people’s closets and garages – and that’s just in the U.S. We are revitalizing the consumer-selling segment of our marketplace.

Our next strategic pillar is creating exceptional product and brand experiences. It’s time to evolve eBay’s platform and act like a platform company.

Going forward, we intend to play our game, and no one else’s.”

Ebay versucht also nicht mehr, Amazon nachzueifern, sondern – als Marktplatz für Schnäppchenjäger – im Wesentlichen da anzuknüpfen, wo es einst vom Weg abgekommen ist (“Ebay am Scheideweg”). Selbst Auktionen sind ja neuerdings wieder ein Thema (“eBay and Sotheby’s Live Auctions Begin on April 1”).

Offen ist aktuell nur noch, wer sich das Enterprise-Geschäft mit Magento schnappt. Ausführlich hatten wir uns über die Zukunft von Ebay & Co. in den Exchanges #83 (“Was wird aus Ebay, Magento & Co.?”) unterhalten.

Umsatzseitig leidet Ebay gerade unter anderem auch unter dem schwachen Euro, wie die Charts zu den Quartalszahlen (PDF) zeigen. Nachdem zuletzt auch personell schon viele Weichen gestellt wurden, lädt Ebay am 1. Mai zur Hauptversammlung.
