Nicht Amazon, sondern Naver hat sich diese Woche Wattpad für 600 Mio. Dollar geschnappt:
„Naver is expected to acquire Wattpad, the global multi-platform entertainment company for original stories and leading social storytelling platform, in a cash and stock transaction valued at more than an estimated USD $600 million.
The move will align Wattpad, and its global community of more than 90 million people, with Naver’s WEBTOON™, a leading digital comics publisher with an average of 72+ million monthly active users.
Wattpad has previously raised USD $117.8 million from international investors in Asia, the United States, and Canada.
The company’s latest round was USD $51 million in 2018 from Tencent Holdings Limited, BDC, Globe Telecom’s Kickstart Ventures, Peterson Group, Canso, and Raine Ventures.“
Wattpad zählte lange zu den Vorzeigebeispielen für die Buchbranche.
Früher hätte sich Amazon solch eine Gelegenheit nicht entgehen lassen (siehe Amazon übernimmt Goodreads für bessere Empfehlungen). Heute hat Amazon aber offensichtlich andere Prioritäten („Wondery to join Amazon Music“).
Schade jedenfalls, dass sich auch Wattpad seine Unabhängigkeit nicht bewahren konnte.
